10 Statistics on Health IT Adoption in California

Electronic health record adoption in California has increased, but the state's hospitals lag behind in the adoption of other technologies, according to a report from the California HealthCare Foundation.

In 2012, 49 percent of California's hospitals had fully implemented an EHR, up from 13 percent in 2007. An additional 32 percent of hospitals had a record system that was partially electronic and partially paper-based. Of the hospitals with a fully implemented EHR, 83 percent successfully attested to meaningful use. As of May 2012, 48 percent of hospitals nationally had achieved meaningful use, according to HHS.

However, California hospitals have not adopted some technology as quickly as other U.S. hospitals. In 2012, 97 percent of all U.S. hospitals had implemented a clinical decision support system, as compared with 71 percent of California hospitals. Similarly, 83 percent of all hospitals in the country had a clinical data repository, compared with 71 percent of California hospitals. The state's hospitals were also behind in terms of a hospital physician documentation function; 45 percent of U.S. hospitals had this functionality in 2012, compared with 41 percent of California hospitals.
