GLP-1s linked to wide range of health benefits: Study

A new study from the Department of Veteran Affairs, published in Nature Medicine, found that GLP-1 weight loss drugs including Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound, may offer benefits beyond weight loss — the latest in a growing body of research legitimizing the versatility of the drug class.

The research, which analyzed the medical records of 2.5 million VA patients, suggests these medications could help with cardiovascular, kidney and liver diseases and even improve blood clotting, respiration and infection resistance.

Additionally, the study, published Jan. 20 in Nature Medicine, indicates that the drugs could reduce suicidal thoughts, challenging earlier concerns about their mental health effects.

However, the research also highlighted some potential risks, including gastrointestinal issues, reflux, headaches and pancreatitis. An unexpected link to arthritis was also observed, though researchers noted this finding warrants further investigation.
