West Virginia health system sees financial boost amid busy flu season

Flu-related hospital visits have proved financially beneficial for Charleston (W. Va.) Area Medical Center Health System, according to a MetroNews report.

Healthcare organizations across the nation have seen an influx of patients during this particularly busy flu season, and CAMC is no exception.

CAMC CFO Jeff Sandene said the hospital's revenue rose over the last few months due to the increased number of flu-related visits.

"I think we're out of the flu. It dissipated over the last several months, but we're definitely very busy with the flu, unfortunately," Mr. Sandene said, according to the report.

CAMC's busy flu season comes as the system works to improve its finances. As part of these efforts, the system revealed last July plans to eliminate approximately 300 jobs.

Mr. Sandene cited other efforts in the report as well, such as hiring about 40 more physicians.
