Net income last quarter grew 3.4 percent for Indianapolis-based health insurer WellPoint, according to its first quarter report ended March 31.

The nation’s second-largest health insurer saw total revenue spike 14.7 percent over last year to $17.7 billion, fueled in part by a 6.3 percent rise in membership to 35.8 million. Expenses for the quarter were also up 16.3 percent year over year, largely due to a $44.4 million increase in interest expenses, 40.7 percent higher than the previous first quarter.
