WakeMed in North Carolina Laying Off Management to Avert Falling Reimbursements

WakeMed, an 870-bed healthcare system based in Raleigh, N.C., plans to eliminate almost 30 vice presidents, directors and managers out of a total of 85 laid-off workers in an effort to head off a projected loss of reimbursements, according to a report by the News Observer.

In a memo to employees, WakeMed CEO Bill Akinson said the system is also cutting back funds for general marketing, advertising and nonclinical equipment and expenses to help offset a $35 million anticipated drop in Medicare and Medicaid funding.

WakeMed said none of the cuts will directly affect patient care.
