After two consecutive years of operating losses, the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based academic medical center reported an operating surplus of $19.2 million in the first half of fiscal 2015.
Driving the hospital’s financial recovery was growth in inpatient admissions, which were up 10.7 percent in the six months ended Dec. 31, 2014, compared to the same period of the preceding year.
Expansion of ambulatory facilities and operating room capacity management strategies drove higher case volume during the first half of fiscal 2015.
Wake Forest Medical Center CEO John D. McConnell, MD, also attributed the volume growth to the work of Bobbi Carbone, MD, president and COO of the medical center. Dr. Carbone “brought significant focus on improving patient access and enhancing provider throughput,” said Dr. McConnell in a news release.
