Hospitals and health systems in Virginia provided a community benefit of $1.6 billion in 2017 as defined by the IRS, while also contributing other forms of assistance for a total of $3.29 billion of community support, according to a 2019 report from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
"Hospitals in Virginia are cornerstones in the communities they serve that support the economy by providing good jobs and local investments and promote public well-being by providing access to vital health services and medical treatment," said Sean T. Connaughton, president and CEO of the healthcare association. "The 2019 Annual Report on Community Benefit highlights a few of the many ways in which community hospitals and health systems serve and support the Commonwealth and its people."
The breakdown of the community support:
Medicare shortfall: $842.25 million
Financial assistance/charity care: $672 million
Bad debt expense: $553.15 million
Community programs and services: $396.22 million
Medicaid shortfall: $359.17 million
Taxes paid: $293.18 million
Subsidized health services: $168.7 million
Community building: $4.55 million
Other means-tested government programs: $806,735
