Burlington-based University of Vermont Health has eliminated 142 positions. Seventy-six are permanent position eliminations while 66 roles will be restructured with new job descriptions, the health system announced June 9.
Most reductions fall outside of direct patient care, though the system cautioned that some cuts were “targeted clinical changes where necessary.” The action affected leaders, staff and nurses, according to the health system, which said nurses are being encouraged to apply for open nursing positions across the organization. UVM Health is also reorganizing an unspecified number of additional positions.
The reductions come as the health system is facing a projected financial gap of more than $300 million over the next three years and has reported losses averaging roughly $460,000 per day since January. UVM Health employs about 14,000 people across Vermont and northern New York. Steps already underway to close the gap include reducing locum and travel staff, pausing discretionary spending, pausing variable pay for leaders and transforming clinical schedules systemwide to improve patient access.
“These are extremely difficult decisions because of their impact on our valued colleagues,” CEO Stephen Leffler, MD, said in the release. “We must make these hard choices to ensure we can continue to provide high-quality care that is accessible and more affordable for the communities we serve.”
The June cuts follow the elimination of 146 roles in July 2025, most in administrative support functions, and several senior leadership positions cut in a systemwide restructuring late last year. The health system said the latest action did not specifically include executive leaders, though it continues to evaluate its senior leadership structure and said additional changes may occur over time. UVM Health said additional actions will be needed over time.
