Charlottesville, Va.-based UVA Health’s Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology received $6 million in gifts from philanthropists to help establish the UVA Biotech Innovation Fund. The fund will provide long-term support for the UVA Spark Innovative Medicines program, which helps turn innovative discoveries into new treatments for patients.
“The mission of the UVA Manning Institute of Biotechnology is to transform science into medicines,” Mark Esser, PhD, chief scientific officer and head of the Manning Institute, said in a news release. “This gift will accelerate our work to turn innovative discoveries into medicines that help patients.”
In August, the Manning Institute hosted its inaugural Spark Tank competition for UVA faculty and students to pitch scientific projects. Through the Spark program, researchers receive the resources and mentorship they need to develop their ideas. Winners receive funding to turn their discoveries into clinical applications. The fund ensures that future cohorts will have access to the financial resources to continue their research.
