UPMC swings operating margin from -2.9% to 1.3% in Q2

Pittsburgh-based UPMC recorded an operating income of $111.2 million (1.3% operating margin) in the second quarter of 2025, up from an operating loss of $210.3 million (-2.9% margin) during the same period last year, according to its Aug. 28 financial report. 

The system reported total revenue of $8.3 billion during the three months ended June 30, up from $7.3 billion during the same period last year. Net patient service revenue was $3.2 billion, up from $3 billion. Insurance enrollment revenue totaled $4.4 billion, up from $3.7 billion.

Total operating expenses were $8.2 billion in the quarter, up from $7.5 billion. Salaries, professional fees and employee benefits totaled $2.6 billion, up from $2.4 billion. Insurance claim expense was $3.2 billion, up from $2.8 billion. 

Restructuring costs totaled $15 million in the second quarter, compared to $48.2 million during the same period last year. 

UPMC recorded a net income of $366.1 million in the quarter, up from $40.7 million during the same period last year. 

For the six months ended June 30, UPMC reported an operating income of $349 million (2.1% margin), up from an operating loss of $313 million (-2.2% margin) during the same period in 2024. 

UPMC’s health services division saw its operating income prior to restructuring costs increase by $285 million year over year in the first half of 2025. The system attributed the increase to improved patient volumes and continued operational efficiency efforts. 

The system’s insurance services division saw operating income increase by $319 million year over year prior to restructuring costs. UPMC attributed the gain to improved underwriting margins for its Medicaid, Community HealthChoices, Community Care Health Organization and Medicare products.
