University Health will not step in to save Texas hospital

San Antonio-based University Health will not take over local Texas Vista Medical Center after the hospital said it would close May 1 without University Health assuming operations, the San Antonio Business Journal reported March 8.

University Health was willing to consider taking over the property, even bringing in attorneys to discuss the matter. However, CEO George Hernandez told the Journal that the last-minute nature of the deal ultimately made it untenable.

"That's too fast for us," Mr. Hernandez said. "We have to do our due diligence."

Additionally, structural concerns about Texas Vista's 40-year-old campus made University Health officials wary of taking over the hospital.

The health system is working to find space for patients and staff displaced by the hospital closure.
