UnitedHealth’s subsidiary count gets bigger

UnitedHealth Group’s count of subsidiaries and related entities has reached 2,807, according to the latest “Sunlight Report,” updated in October.

The report comes from the Center for Health & Democracy and is funded by Arnold Ventures. The updated report identified more entities since the findings published in July 2025, factoring in 2024 year-end and 2025 Schedule Y state insurance filings, publicly confirmed 2026 transactions and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings through the second quarter of 2026.

UnitedHealth, now the fourth-largest company in the world by revenue, has faced intensified scrutiny over vertical integration. UnitedHealth cut back on its subsidiary disclosures in its fiscal 2025 annual report, listing 10 entities versus thousands a year earlier.

Here are four notes from the report:

  1. UnitedHealth’s acquisitions have slowed since the original report’s data window. From early 2024 to the end of 2025, 368 entities joined and 268 left. The report documented two acquisitions in 2026: benefits administration platform Alegeus Technologies and six surgery centers through a Federal Trade Commission order.
  1. Acquisition spending has slowed, as well. The company spent $13.4 billion, $4.5 billion and $98 million on acquisitions in 2024, 2025 and the first half of 2026, respectively.
  1. Within the 180 entities that departed in 2025, 82 were home health entities and 24 were international.
  1. Home health and hospice provider LHC Group has the most entities under the UnitedHealth umbrella at 835. Surgery center group SCA Health follows with 689.
