President and CEO John O’Brien said the system produced the surplus by cutting costs, deferring purchases, treating more patients and reversing investment losses.

Factoring out investment income, the system reported an $82.8 million operating surplus for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 39 percent from the previous year.
