UHS' CEO-to-worker pay ratio in 2023

King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services CEO and President Marc Miller was paid 287 times what the median employee earned in 2023, according to a proxy statement filed April 4 with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The 2023 annual compensation for Mr. Miller was $14,407,937; the median UHS employee's salary in 2023 was $50,152. The ratio of these amounts was 287-to-1.

UHS said in the filing it determined its median employee by using the greater of the total annual W-2 wages of employees both in the U.S. and the U.K. or calculated annualized pay for those who commenced work during 2023 or were on a leave of absence. The employee population consisted of full-time, part-time and temporary workers.

The SEC requires public companies to disclose how CEO pay stacks up with the median employee's overall compensation each year.

In 2022, CHS' CEO-to-worker pay ratio was 221-to-1, according to that year's SEC filing

After Mr. Miller, the highest earners at UHS in 2023 were Executive Chair Alan Miller and Executive Vice President and President of Acute Care Edward Sim, who earned $8,369,731 and $5,469,137, respectively.
