Two-thirds of Maine hospitals reported negative operating margins in 1st half of 2022

Two-thirds of Maine hospitals reported negative operating margins in the first half of 2022 as inflation and staffing shortages pushed margins into the red, Maine Public Radio reported Feb. 21.

In the most recently reported fiscal year, Maine hospitals reported a median operating profit margin of negative 17.74 percent. 

Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health, one of the largest systems in the state, lost $131.7 million in the fiscal year ending in September.

The system recently had its credit outlook downgraded after transferring 1,400 workers to health services company Optum.
