Tufts Medical Center sees operating income climb 3.8%

Boston-based Tufts Medical Center, an affiliate of Burlington, Mass.-based Wellforce, saw operating revenue and operating income rise in the third quarter of 2018.

The medical center system recorded operating revenue of $285.9 million in the three months ended June 30, up 9.9 percent from $260.1 million in the same period a year prior. Tufts partially attributed the increase to higher patient volume. It saw net patient service revenue increase from $211 million in the third quarter of 2017 to $228.2 million in the third quarter of 2018, according to recently released bondholder documents.

The medical center system's expenses climbed 10.1 percent in the quarter ended June 30 to $280.4 million, compared to the same period a year prior. Expense increases for salaries and wages, as well as employee benefits, contributed to the boost.

Tufts ended the third quarter of 2018 with operating income of $5.5 million, up 3.8 percent from $5.3 million in the same period of 2017.

After factoring in a nonoperating loss of $133,000, the medical center system reported net income of $5.4 million in the third quarter of 2018, down 59.4 percent from $13.3 million in the same period a year prior.
