Trinity Health improves operating income to $281M in fiscal 2026: 6 notes

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health saw $281 million in operating income (1.1% margin) in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, up from a $12.2 million operating loss (0% margin) posted in fiscal 2025, according to its most recent financial report.

Six things to know:

  1. Trinity Health’s total revenue grew $1.3 billion (5.2%) year over year to $26.8 billion. Net patient service revenue rose $580.5 million (2.7%) to $22.2 billion. Premium and capitation revenue jumped $467.2 million (36.7%) year over year to $1.7 billion.
  2. Operating expenses were $26.3 billion in fiscal 2026, up from $25.2 billion the previous year. Supply costs grew to $5.1 billion, purchased services and medical claims grew to $3.7 billion, salaries and wages grew to $11.4 billion, and employee benefits grew to $2.2 billion.
  3. Trinity saw $103.9 million in restructuring costs, mainly related to administrative cost cuts. It also saw $42.7 million in asset impairment charges.
  4. Days cash on hand rose from 234 to 251. Trinity’s long-term debt was $6.3 billion, net assets were $23 billion and total assets were $37.8 billion as of June 30, 2026.
  5. Trinity sold assets related to Sioux City, Iowa-based MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center’s operations on Sept. 1, 2025, to UnityPoint Health System. It received cash of $3.5 million, with a gain of $2 million recorded in other revenue in the system’s consolidated statements of operations and changes in net assets. 
  6. In April, Trinity signed an agreement to transfer Springfield, Mass.-based Mercy Medical Center to Baystate Health, also based in Springfield, with the deal expected to close in fiscal 2027. As part of the transfer, $68.1 million of assets were reclassified as “assets held for sale” in existing assets, and related liabilities of $45.5 million were reclassified to “liabilities held for sale” in the system’s consolidated balance sheet.
