Three Largest Jefferson Parish, La., Hospitals to Lose At Least $50 Million in 2008

Post-Katrina challenges, including rising labor costs, increasing numbers of uninsured patients and slowing Medicare reimbursements, will cause the three largest hospitals in Jefferson Parish, La., to lose at least $50 million in 2008, according to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

The three largest hospitals are West Jefferson Medical Center, East Jefferson General Hospital and Ochsner Medical Center.

While Congress has allocated $600 million in grants to areas affected by Katrina, there is no stipulation that hospitals affected by the hurricane will be aided. The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) hopes that some of this federal aid will be distributed to Louisiana’ hospitals, fearing that otherwise they will be forced to cut services, according to the story.
