The gift was announced at the Texas Children’s Legacy of Motown Gala Sept. 29 that raised more than $83 million for the hospital.
To honor the donors, the hospital will name the new 19-story patient tower the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower. The first phase of the tower, which houses neurosurgery, orthopedics, transplant surgery and 84 intensive care unit beds, opened in May. The second phase opened in late September.
“I am incredibly grateful to Lester and Sue for this transformational gift,” Mark Wallace, president and CEO of Texas Children’s, told the Business Journal. “Their unwavering commitment to our patients and families over the years is unmatched, and this is another shining example of their extraordinary generosity and compassionate care for others.”
Mr. Smith is the founder of Smith Energy Co. in Houston.
