Temple lost $59.8M in 2022

Philadelphia-based Temple University Health reported an operating loss of $59.8 million in 2022 after reporting a gain of $8.5 million in 2021, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Feb. 28.

On an operating cash basis, Temple lost money in the first half of fiscal 2023. Costs are piling up as patients stay for longer at the health system.

The average length of stay increased to 6.28 days in 2022 from 5.96 days in 2021.

"We're not getting paid any more to care for those patients that are in the bed for an extra third of a day," Temple CFO Nick Barcellona said at Temple's quarterly earnings call, according to the Inquirer.
