CMS said the one-year extension to 2014, which was finalized last year, should give physicians and other providers enough time to train coders, conduct testing and finalize a complete system turnaround. CMS also said it believes payors, hospitals, health systems and large physician practices “are far along in their ICD-10 implementation.”
In related news, CMS also released ICD-10 implementation timelines and checklists for small hospitals, physician practices of all sizes and payors. CMS recommends small hospitals start internal ICD-10 testing by April, and external testing with payors and vendors should begin in October.
