A survey by the American Hospital Association has found that six out of 10 hospitals nationally are seeing a greater proportion of patients without insurance in emergency departments, and nearly half of hospitals have cut staff, according to an AHA news release.

According to the survey, nine of 10 hospitals are cutting jobs or services due to the economic downturn, and nearly eight of 10 hospitals have stopped, postponed or scaled back projects such as facility upgrades planned or already in progress.

Despite these cutes, 40 percent of hospitals are expecting losses in the first quarter of 2009.
