Study: ED Spending Could Be 10% of Total Healthcare Expenditures

Emergency care could account for as much as 10 percent of the country’s $2.6 trillion in annual healthcare expenditures, according to a study in Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Researchers examined data on emergency department visits from a variety of sources, including the National Emergency Department Sample and data from a large private insurer. The authors estimate at least 4.9 percent of total healthcare costs derives from emergency care, and it may be as much as 10 percent.  

This estimate runs contrary to the commonly accepted figure of 1.9 percent, according to a news release by Brown University, home of the study’s lead author.
