The federal funds, coming through the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program, will help the rural hospitals improve patient safety, reduce medication errors, better handle readmissions and provide a new cash flow, according to state officials.

The grants range from $5,000 to $15,000. South Dakota has 38 total critical access hospitals.
