Kansas is one of 10 states that has not adopted Medicaid expansion. In November, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly began a statewide tour to lobby for Medicaid expansion. According to Ms. Kelly, 60 of the 104 rural hospitals are at risk of closure in the state.
In October, Herington (Kan.) Hospital abruptly closed after serving the community for more than a century.
“Medicaid expansion by itself is not going to solve all of the problems for rural providers, or even providers of any type or size. What it does do is it solves an issue for the people that would obtain that coverage,” Mr. Barta told KWCH. “Those are the ones that are really going to see the biggest benefit. It also addresses an issue that providers like us as a critical access hospital and rural providers around the area are seeing with higher numbers of individuals that don’t have health insurance.”
