Rhode Island has proposed a Feb. 27 deadline extension for The Centurion Foundation to acquire Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings’ two Rhode Island hospitals.
The proposal also allows the state to evaluate other potential buyers for North Providence, R.I.-based Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and Providence, R.I.-based Roger Williams Medical Center, according to a Jan. 29 statement from state Attorney General Peter Neronha, Gov. Daniel McKee, state House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, state Senate President Valarie Lawson, the Rhode Island Department of Health and the executive office of HHS.
Centurion received Texas bankruptcy court approval in February 2025 to close its purchase of bankrupt Prospect’s two hospitals. However, Centurion has been unable to do so and missed a Jan. 15 bankruptcy court-ordered deadline to purchase the hospitals.
The hospitals have remained operational through a $50 million escrow account secured in 2021 by Mr. Neronha.
“[The] Attorney General today filed a proposed stipulation and order in federal bankruptcy court in Texas which, if approved, would extend the transfer date of the hospitals to Feb. 27, 2026, to allow Centurion additional time to pursue finalization of the purchase of the hospitals,” the statement said. “At the same time, the stipulation would authorize the state and the debtors to evaluate alternative proposals from new prospective buyers of the hospitals. Parties interested in submitting proposals must do so by Feb. 17, 2026.”
