UnitedHealth Group executives outlined several artificial intelligence initiatives during the company’s Oct. 13 earnings call.
“AI-enabled capabilities are beginning to help clinicians spend more time with patients, improve service speed and experience, streamline administration and reduce friction for both consumers and clinicians,” CEO Stephen Hemsley said on the call.
Here are six things for revenue cycle leaders to know:
1. Optum Integrity One, which automates claim coding in the revenue cycle, launched at the end of 2025 with two clients. It now has 15 clients implemented and another 24 implementing, according to Sandeep Dadlani, CEO of Optum Insight.
“For Optum Insight, the goal is to simplify healthcare with AI for consumers, providers, payers and life sciences companies,” Mr. Dadlani said.
2. Optum Insight is rationalizing existing products and contracts, adding AI to current offerings and launching new AI-first products and platforms. Mr. Dadlani said a series of product launches will roll out over the next two quarters. Optum recently joined the Anthropic Partner Network, following go-to-market partnerships with Microsoft and Google in recent quarters.
3. AI-enabled information gathering and research has shortened appeal cycle times by 26%, Mr. Hemsley said, and the company expects that to accelerate in 2027. Separately, Mr. Dadlani said Optum is working with a Medicaid plan to adjudicate its most complex claims “in seconds instead of days” using agentic AI.
4. UnitedHealth Group CFO Wayne DeVeydt said Optum Insight’s performance is benefiting from technology and AI-enabled improvements, including in payment integrity. Reinvesting in the business, including technology modernization and “broad-based AI adoption,” remains the company’s top capital deployment priority, he said. Mr. DeVeydt listed further AI gains, including product opportunities for Optum Insight, among the company’s 2027 tailwinds. On the headwind side, he said the company will accelerate modernization investments, particularly at UnitedHealthcare and Optum Insight.
5. AI-enabled chart summarization now reaches more than 40% of UnitedHealth’s employed clinicians and has cut chart review time by 33%. Optum Health is also investing in ambient documentation that moves beyond note-taking to “next best action” insights for clinicians.
6. Alongside its AI work, UnitedHealthcare is on track to implement all of its previously announced prior authorization reforms by the end of 2026. Together, the reforms will reduce total prior authorizations by 30%, including a two-thirds reduction for people under age 18.
