The report, New Jersey Hospitals 2009 Economic Impact, shows that New Jersey hospitals paid over $72 million in taxes and spent nearly $2.3 billion in purchased services, such as contracted labor, building supplies and utilities, in 2008.

Hospitals also employed 116,000 full-time equivalent jobs in 2008, with a total employee payroll of over $7.4 billion, according to the report. Labor projections through 2016 show that New Jersey’s healthcare sector is second only to state, county and municipal governments in total employment and remains the state’s single largest industry for job growth.

The report also highlights the individual community contributions of all 73 New Jersey hospitals.
