The charity care total was an increase of $24 million from 2009. Other economic figures from the VHHA’s report include the following:
• Virginia’s hospitals and health systems accounted for roughly $27.7 billion in total economic activity.
• The hospitals had a Medicaid shortfall of $318 million, an increase of $113 million from 2009.
• The Medicare shortfall totaled $460 million.
• The amount of community benefit provided by tax-exempt hospitals exceeded the value of their tax exemptions by a combined $531 million.
