Rates of Growth for Personal Healthcare Spending

Here are the rates of personal health care spending growth by type of service from 2006 to 2007, as reported by the 2007 National Health Expenditure Accounts.

  • Hospital: Increased 7.3 percent to $696.5 billion
  • Physician and clinical services: Increased 6.5 percent to $478.8 billion
  • Other professional services (therapists, optometrists, etc.): Increased 5.6 percent to $62 billion
  • Prescription drugs: Increased 4.9 percent to $227.5 billion
  • Durable medical equipment: Increased 0.9 percent to $24.5 billion
  • Other non-durable medical products: Increased 5.7 percent to $37.4 billion
