Insurers see the technology as a way to cut costs and bridge the gaps between physicians, patients and health plans, as it allows patients to see almost any type of health plan information, including drug prices, claims history and health savings account balances, the report said.
Health insurers determined the next step will be apps for physicians, who are high users of smartphones and are integrated closely with patients. Apps could potentially include coding suggestions and physician alerts of when a patient is due for certain screenings or check-ups.
