IASIS Wins New Arizona Medicaid Contract

The Arizona Medicaid program, also known as the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, has awarded a new contract to Health Choice Arizona, a managed care subsidiary of Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare.

IASIS’ new contract included a three-year initial term and renewal options for two years after. Health Choice Arizona, which covers more than 174,000 Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries in Arizona and Utah, will cover Medicaid beneficiaries in eight Arizona counties.

While the Medicaid news benefited IASIS, the same could not be said for for-profit hospital competitor Vanguard Health Systems. The Nashville, Tenn.-based chain’s health plan, VHS Phoenix Health Plan, was not awarded a new Medicaid contract, and it plans to pursue a capped contract in two of Arizona’s biggest counties.

IASIS operates three acute-care hospitals in Arizona, while Vanguard operates six.
