Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell proposed a $20 million budget cut to hospitals that disproportionately serve Medicaid patients and the uninsured poor, according to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The proposed cuts would affect 120 hospitals across the state, including those in small towns and big cities. The Department of Public Welfare said that it was forced to make the cuts due to the state’s budget problems.

Hospital advocates argued that the funds are essential in serving those types of patients and that hospitals cannot simply turn them away, according to the report. The hospitals worry that if they are forced to recoup these costs, they will have to lay off workers.
