Penn State Health has fewer than 100 days of cash on hand, reports $110M loss

Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health said it had 90.3 days of cash on hand as it reported an overall loss of $110.4 million for the six months ended Dec. 31.

The median for days of cash on hand for a health system is 246.9 days as of August 2022, according to Becker's.

That figure was revealed as the five-acute-care-hospital system reported operating losses of $114 million for the period compared with a net operating gain of $24.3 million for the same period in 2021. Expenses for the 2022 period were more than 11 percent higher than in 2021 to total $1.9 billion.

As well as the five hospitals, which include the 634-bed Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State Health also operates approximately 84 sites of patient care in nine counties across Pennsylvania.
