Penn Medicine set to close hospice center

Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine Hospice at Rittenhouse, a part of Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine, is set to close in February as the health system moves toward home-based hospice care, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported Dec. 14.

The system opened the 20-bed hospice center in 2008 at the old Graduate Hospital building. As a result of the closure, 33 positions will be eliminated.

“Consistent with trends across the region and nation, most patients now prefer to receive their hospice care at home,” Penn Medicine told the Philadelphia Business Journal. “After careful consideration, we determined that we could deliver care more efficiently by ramping up home hospice service and decentralizing inpatient hospice care to our hospitals.”
