Oklahoma hospital closes: 3 things to know

Latimer County General Hospital, a 33-bed hospital in Wilburton, Okla., shut down last month, less than two weeks before another rural Oklahoma hospital closed.

Here are three things to know:

1. Latimer County General Hospital suspended services in May. The 33-bed hospital closed Oct. 1, according to a Facebook post by Danny Baldwin, a member of the hospital's board of directors.

2. Ninety rural hospitals have closed since 2010, and Latimer County General Hospital is one of five rural hospitals in Oklahoma that have shut down, according to research from the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program.

3. On Oct. 12, less than two weeks after Latimer County General Hospital closed, Pauls Valley (Okla.) Regional Medical Center shut down. Because of the closure, about 130 employees lost their jobs.
