OhioHealth to close hospital maternity unit

Columbus-based OhioHealth plans to end inpatient maternity unit services at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio, effective July 31.

Four things to know:

1. The health system said the decision followed a review of the inpatient maternity program by a team that included specialty physicians, according to a July 10 OhioHealth news release.

2. OhioHealth said obstetric volumes are decreasing in rural and suburban areas nationally and in local markets. During the last fiscal year, fewer than 10% of babies born in the OhioHealth system to families living in Delaware County were delivered at Grady Memorial.

3. Many Delaware County families already use OhioHealth Dublin (Ohio) Methodist Hospital and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus for delivery care, the release said. Both hospitals provide 24/7 on-site obstetric provider availability and a higher level of newborn care through a partnership with Columbus-based Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

4. Prenatal, postnatal and gynecologic care will continue through OhioHealth Physician Group Obstetrics and Gynecology locations in Delaware, Lewis Center and Jerome. The physician group is also adding a gynecologist to expand access to urogynecology and specialty pelvic surgery services, the release said.
