Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health recorded operating income of $77.8 million (2.5% margin) in the second quarter of 2026, down from $207.7 million (7% margin) in the same quarter last year, according to its Aug. 28 financial report.
Five things to know:
1. Novant reported total operating revenue of $3.1 billion during the three months ended June 30, a 5.7% increase year over year. Net patient service revenue totaled $2.6 billion, a 4.5% increase, while other revenue was $532 million, up 11.9% year over year.
2. Total operating expenses were $3.1 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 10.8% year over year. Salaries and employee benefits totaled $1.5 billion, a 9.8% increase. Supplies and other expenses were $1.4 billion, up 11.4%.
3. Emergency department visits totaled 167,883 in the quarter, up 5.3% from the same period last year. Discharges were 43,736, down 1% year over year, while occupancy across the system’s staffed beds was 87.6%, down from 90%.
4. Novant recorded net income of $397.8 million in the second quarter of 2026, down from $460.7 million during the same period in 2025.
5. Through the first six months of 2026, Novant Health reported operating income of $169.1 million (2.7% margin), down from $285.8 million (5% margin) in the same period last year. North Carolina’s Healthcare Access and Stabilization Program factored into both sides of the ledger. Novant attributed part of its patient service revenue growth to increased revenue accrued under the program, while also citing higher HASP assessment costs, recorded within supplies and other expenses, as a driver of expense growth.
