Northwell Health posts 1.4% margin in Q2: 6 things to know

New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health recorded operating income of $76.1 million (1.4% margin) in the second quarter of 2026, down from $100.3 million (2% margin) in the same quarter last year, according to its Aug. 31 financial report. 

Six things to know:

1. Total operating revenue was $5.3 billion during the three months ended June 30, up 7.7% year over year. Net patient service revenue increased 7.4% to $3.7 billion. Physician practice revenue increased 9.3% to $1.1 billion. Other operating revenue increased 7% to $575 million.

2. Total operating expenses were $5.3 billion during the quarter, up 8.4% year over year. Salaries and employee benefits increased 8.4% to $3.4 billion. Supplies and expenses increased 8.2% to $1.6 billion.

3. Northwell completed the second phase of its Epic EHR and revenue cycle implementation in May, bringing the combined rollout to 17 hospitals and more than 900 locations since the first phase went live in November 2025.  

4. Days of total patient revenue in patient accounts receivable as of June 30 was 60 days, up from 53 on Dec. 31. Northwell attributed the increase to the effect of anticipated delays associated with the Epic implementation and the timing of claim settlements with commercial payers. 

5. Net income was $373.6 million in the second quarter of 2026, down from $422 million during the same period last year. 

6. For the six months ended June 30, Northwell recorded operating income of $220 million (2.1% margin), up from $131.4 million (1.3% margin) during the same period last year.
