Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health is reorganizing its services, including hospital operations and governance, into three regions of the state.
The system is also expanding outpatient care as part of this work, “evolving into a model that prioritizes services around patients, as opposed to care centered around hospitals,” Chief Marketing and Communication Officer Suzanne Spruce said in a Nov. 4 statement shared with Becker’s.
The three regions are North, Central and Southern Maine, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s. The changes are aimed at improving access and timeliness of care.
“In addition, this plan is the best path forward for financial sustainability as hospitals nationwide navigate increasing costs and lower reimbursement,” Ms. Spruce said.
The changes come more than a year after the system shared plans to restructure to improve its financial stability. At the time, Northern Light said hospitals would not close as part of the restructuring, but services at some locations may change. The July 2025 news landed weeks after Northern Light Inland Hospital and associated Clinics in Waterville, Maine, closed in late May.
