The state aims to cut funding to state Medicaid programs by $30 million in an effort to control Medicaid spending. Total state Medicaid spending in fiscal year 2017 is expected to reach $1.2 billion, with an additional $4.5 billion in funding from the federal government. Even then, the program is expected to be $80 million short of what it needs to operate at full capacity.
New Mexico expanded its Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act in 2013. Enrollment in the state program has since climbed 66 percent, compared to 23 percent Medicaid growth nationally.
Reimbursement cuts to providers for Medicaid services take effect July 1.
