New Jersey Hospital Expenditures Hit $20.4B in 2012

In 2012, New Jersey’s 72 acute-care hospitals contributed $20.4 billion to the state’s economy, according to a report from the New Jersey Hospital Association.

That figure included $8.1 billion of employee pay based on more than 120,000 full-time equivalent jobs. Other findings from the NJHA’s report include:

•    New Jersey hospitals purchased $2.6 billion in 2012, most of which went toward contracted labor and pharmaceuticals. Utility costs totaled $267 million.

•    Charity care hit almost $1.3 billion.

•    State hospitals paid more than $138 million in taxes.
