Henderson (Nev.) Hospital has shared plans to end maternity and neonatal intensive care unit services Sept. 30 following an internal assessment.
The 338-bed acute care hospital, which is a member of Las Vegas-based The Valley Health System, is working with employees, healthcare providers and necessary government agencies to ensure a seamless transition for patients, staff and physicians, according to an Aug. 12 news release shared with Becker’s.
Approximately 100 employees will be affected by the closures. They will work with human resources to apply for other positions at the hospital or with maternity-related positions at The Valley Health System’s Centennial Hills, Spring Valley or Summerlin hospitals, all in Las Vegas.
In a fact sheet, also shared with Becker’s, the hospital pointed to an increase in emergency room volume and admissions for medical and surgical care. It also highlighted an area birth rate decrease, physician retirement, obstetrics office closures and a decrease in patients being referred by maternal fetal medicine specialists resulting in NICU admission decreases.
The hospital will provide a 24/7 physician on call for all gynecological medical emergencies that may occur in its main emergency department or one of its freestanding EDs. It will also support breast and gynecological surgeries.
“All mothers and babies will continue to receive safe, quality treatment and care before being appropriately discharged or transferred to a Valley Health System hospital with maternity services or another facility,” the release said.
Henderson Hospital will convert its existing maternity unit into 32 medical surgical rooms. Its NICU space will be renovated to add an additional 32 medical surgical beds with an expected completion date of Dec. 31, 2027, the fact sheet said.
