State Sen. Adam Morfeld, D-Lincoln, said Wednesday he is seeking a ballot measure to let voters decide the issue and plans to propose such a measure next year, according to the report.
It would not be the first state to do so. Maine became the 32nd state to approve Medicaid expansion and the first to do so via referendum Tuesday. The vote in Maine came after Republican Gov. Paul LePage vetoed multiple legislative attempts to expand coverage to more low-income residents.
In Nebraska, Republican governors have also opposed Medicaid expansion, and multiple legislative attempts to expand coverage have failed, according to the report. Mr. Morfeld has supported the issue. The state lawmaker said about 90,000 more Nebraskans would gain Medicaid coverage under his new proposal, according to the report.
