The poll also examined “sick Americans” (27 percent of survey participants) who said they had a serious illness, medical condition, injury or disability requiring a lot of medical care or who had been hospitalized overnight in the past 12 months. Of this group, more than 40 percent said the cost of their medical care over the last 12 months has caused a “very serious” (20 percent) or “somewhat serious” (23 percent) problem for their or their family’s finances. Additionally, one in six sick Americans reported that there was a time in the past 12 months when they could not get the medical care they needed due to finical or other access issues.
Other key findings include:
• Thirteen percent of Americans believed they were given the wrong diagnosis, treatment or test.
• Twenty-six percent of sick Americans said that their condition was not well-managed.
• Thirty percent of hospitalized Americans said there was poor communication among the physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals involved in their care.
