Researchers compared ED encounters in which HIE data were accessed in all major EDs in Memphis, Tenn., to ED encounters without HIE access. They found that HIE access was associated with a decrease in hospital admissions in EDs that accessed the data through a secure Web browser or through print summaries.
After deducting annual operating costs, the total cost reduction from HIE access was $1.07 million, 97.6 percent of which was due to reduced hospital admissions.
