New York City-based Mount Sinai Beth Israel has closed after it received approval from the Appellate Division of New York State Supreme Court, a spokesperson for Mount Sinai said in an April 8 statement shared with Becker’s

Beth Israel had already closed inpatient services and closed its emergency department as the last step in the hospital’s comprehensive closure plan, which began in February.

“We have sent electronic and paper letters to more than 55,000 of our patients to ensure they have information on the closure, sent updates via MyMountSinai notifications, and placed flyers and signage throughout the emergency department and the hospital,” Brendan Carr, MD, CEO of Mount Sinai, said in an April 8 message to employees, obtained by Becker’s.

The approval comes after the hospital’s March 26 planned closure was delayed amid ongoing legal battles with the Community Coalition to Save Beth Israel Hospital to keep the hospital open.

Mount Sinai will open an expanded urgent care center two blocks away from Beth Israel following the closure. The facility has been constructed and is ready to take in patients.

Arthur Schwartz, a lawyer for the coalition, called the hospital’s closure a “sad day” in an April 8 statement shared with Becker’s. He said that the Beth Israel could have been saved, but Dr. Carr and New York Governor Kathy Hochul did not have the “desire to save the hospital.”

Becker’s has reached out to Ms. Hochul’s office for comment and will update this story should more information become available.
