Maryland hospitals’ total margins dropped by 16 percent to negative 13.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The overall financial condition of Maryland hospitals, the majority of which are not-for-profit, is far worse than hospitals nationwide, whose total margins for the fourth quarter of 2008 was negative 7.8 percent.

The financial losses of the Maryland hospitals can be attributed to increases in interest rates and costs to improve programs as well as to falling operating margins, according to the release.
