Dr. Melani was arraigned Thursday before a district magistrate in Monroeville, Pa. A police affidavit says Dr. Melani had a physical altercation with a man reportedly described as the husband of a woman with whom Dr. Melani was having an affair, according to the report.

Dr. Melani’s attorney declined to comment on the affidavit, saying only that there are parts that “do not comport with my client’s recollection and accounting of matters,” according to the report. He also said Dr. Melani was not available to comment.

Highmark chairman and acting CEO, Robert J. Baum, released a statement saying the company will continue in its strategic direction, including plans to acquire West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, according to the report. That deal is pending regulatory approval.
