Moody's affirms Carolinas HealthCare System's 'Aa3' rating

Moody's Investors Service has affirmed the "Aa3" rating assigned to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority, which does business as Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System.

The rating affirmation was supported by a number of factors, including CHS' large geographic footprint across North Carolina and South Carolina. The health system is comprised of several hospitals, including two children's hospitals and an academic medical center. The health system's facilities generated nearly $4.6 billion of revenue in fiscal year 2013.

In addition, CHS' rating affirmation was supported by the health system's strong revenue growth and growing market share in its primary service area.

The health system also faces some challenges, which were considered for the rating affirmation, such as weakened operating cash flow margins in fiscal year 2013 through six months of fiscal year 2014.
